I wouldn't necessarily agree. I actually run linux on my own desktop/notebook, but still want to/plan to deploy an illumos based OS where it provides the best feature set, typically for storage, and depending on your needs for virtualization. And with vmware/virtualbox/kvm, it's fairly trivial to bring up a virtual illumos to work with whether you use windows or linux on your client hardware.
