Since I am one of the mad fools that run OpenIndiana on a laptop, I have to say that it does work very well, but I have to agree with Paul, it isn't the reason that Illumos will survive, and saying that it needs graphics to "survive" would be wrong. My problems with OpenIndiana, compared to Ubuntu: 1) driver support. If you're lucky, or bullish (i.e. make sure every component is Intel, especially for laptops) this won't be a problem, but for everyone else in the world it is. 2) OpenVPN. I can start it and stop it, but only by su'ing/sudo'ing/pfexec'ing ... and definately not graphically ... If I didn't trust the user they couldn't run OpenVPN. Actually, you know what? I'm sure I had more, but the list has run dry ... However that was off-topic. I'd really like to help get a reference distro up, but that really isn't my territory. A proper reference distro, with all the "excess" removed, something that will boot and run the "minimum" of services, something that, I believe from spending days looking at X servers, needs to exist without an X server. everything else, as I see it, is "userland" or "distributor maintained". Jon PS. I don't really like to say it, and I don't mean to upset anyone, but I think that with the recent Sonicle announcement, OI is wounded at least, probably dead ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
