That's disappointing.

Yes, that's exactly what I'd like to see as well. The right toolset to compile/test illumos core, self hosting, no extra parts.

The other problem with using OmniOS for this is that OmniOS is
totally controlled by a single commercial entity, which is
distasteful for some people.

True, but unlike other companies that start with an O they seem pretty philosophically aligned with illumos, and need to abide by the CDDL, so can't lock up the toys in the shed and kick everybody out of their yard :).
