My observation (based on reading many mailing lists and not actual use) is that if you don't need a graphical desktop, then OmniOS is best for ordinary server use because it is well supported, fat-free, uses modern applications, and is still "Solaris"-like.
Important security patches seem to come out right away for OmniOS and since the distribution is "fat free", fewer security patches are required.
OmniOS has the critical xntp fix already, but I have not heard about a fix for OpenIndiana yet.
