Check the disk model in the BIOS. For me AHCI doesn't work so I have to use IDE. I think it's actually a common problem. Others are ACPI and APIC, but that may only be an issue w/ Linux. I can't recall and that system is now out of service.
Is the LiveDVD environment coming up? What happens when you look at the disk e.g. "dd if=/dev/rdsk/????? bs=4096 count=1 | od -c" ? I've got a 3 TB Seagate that format can see, but dumps core if it's selected. The "dd ..." above says it can't open the device. I've got a Hitachi 3 TB right next to it that works fine. This was to be the mirror for that drive.
