Back in Sun, "Solaris", the end product, was comprised of several distinct
consolidations of source. This particular consolidation:

OS/Net --> OS and Networking. Kernel, system libraries, and system
                   commands.

Is what comprises "Illumos". To be fair, "Illumos" also contains OS/Net man
pages now too (where it didn't inside Sun).

As of this moment, there are two installable entities (Linux folks might call
them distros) of Illumos:

        - OpenIndiana, which attempts to keep the look/feel/smell of
OpenSolaris, complete with IPS packaging. If you want to dink
around, I'd suggest starting with OI.

        - SmartOS, a cloud-node/appliance/small-footprint install from
          Joyent.

And there are two companies who make appliance code based on Illumos:

        - NexentaStor, for storage appliances. Our current 3.x is actually
based on pre-Illumos OpenSolaris bits, but we're addressing that.

        - I don't know the specific name, but Delphix creates space-efficient
database appliances based on Illumos code.

Is this enough to clear some of the confusion? Or am I adding to it. And if
I got anything wrong here, please chime in.

Dan
