I've been running RAIDZ2 on one system and RAIDZ1 on another for quite a while. 
These are all small systems.  The new system would have 5 disks.  I've had bad 
experience with SATA cards not being usable with Solaris 10 which motivated my 
question.  On the Z400 (which all of these are) I have to use the IDE emulation 
to use the onboard SATA ports.

I've been swapping hard drives using caddies for some 20 years, but that's 
become inconvenient now that I find myself using Windows for CAD and EDA as 
well as test equipment interfaces.  So I'm working on switching to VirtualBox.  
Plan A is to use Hipster or other Illumos based OS as the host.  Plan B is some 
sort of HW RAID6 and Windows 7 Pro.  I'm leery of that because it makes 
everything else dependent upon something I don't trust and actively dislike.
