Part of the answer is the ZFS arc cache, which should adapt on memory pressure, but is sometimes a bit reluctant in doing this. You can limit that cache in advance with an entry in /etc/system, e.g., set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 0x20000000 (and reboot) caps this to 512 MB (or set it even smaller). But still, 3 GB max is somewhat borderline for a modern OS.
