I think this paradigm shift of contacts being the launch pad for viewing content is important and will be a natural progression into mobile social computing. Facebook is turning into a Plaxo-like app, perhaps an address book/ contact list on steroids and this is going to be a trend seen more often as the next generation and newer trends in messaging architecture unfolds.
