Apple don't want DRM, the labels do. It's a service design problem more than and interaction/product design problem: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/

But, I believe people will eventually learn, once bitten and twice shy.

I don't think so, otherwise Windows would have died long ago.
