" There is an interesting interaction problem here. If I carry different devices depending on what I'm doing on a given day, how do easily I tell the carrier which device I want to receive calls on?"
http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/ Looks like Google is trying to sort that problem by being device independent. Depends on which app is on at the time I suppose. I know if I have my skype on at home and work simultaneously, both will ring when someone calls me, so presumably you could imagine the old "multiple phones on a single line" where all the phones in the house ring when the land line number is called. All your devices potentially ring, you just choose which one to pick up. Gk.
