Fifteen years ago, I had a vanity domain ending in .org. Someone else had the
same domain, but the .com version. We got each other’s emails all the time.

Email addresses are hard!

Just like to add that if anyone knows a senior member of the LDS church in the
UK with the same name as me, tell him that BMW has been suggesting his wife
upgrade her car, the swim team fundraising has been going well, and that his
son’s loan for university housing seems to be going through.

Oh, and that @googlemail.com is the same as @gmail.com.

I only ever see this with my gmail account, but I guess that's more a
reflection of the popularity of gmail than anything else. There is a Paul
Graydon in Canada that keeps using my email address in the most remarkably
sensitive places. It also disturbs me quite what levels of business (and
sensitivity of data) people are happy doing over public email.

So, why did they allow both accounts to be created? These are duplicate
accounts. Or maybe they didn’t and this other person just thinks that is their
account? They sure have used it in some sensitive places.

That is why I said "something else must be wrong". I suspect you'll find
there's a letter off somewhere else and they keep mistyping their address. (I
see this quite a lot, and not just with gmail. One person I know has been
trying to get such a mistake corrected for over 8 years now.)
