The questions you need to ask yourself are somewhere along these lines:
1) how much storage space do I need
2) how do I plan to manage it
a) will it do tiering?
b) does it have or require policy based allocation
c) does it support active or passive management like snmp traps,
polling and performance analysis? Do I want or need that?
d) how will I back it up (if that is needed)
3) how much redundancy is built-into the system and how much do I need?
You probably want at least no single point of failure at the controller,
path, and disk level
4) how much bandwidth do I need?
5) how many years of support are integrated into the up-front price and
what's the yearly maintenance total?
6) how much time do I need to test systems that match my criteria?
7) How critically hurt am I when it breaks, and what are the support
options for repair and debugging?

Help! I'm being sucked into the FUD Zone!

I'm evaluating proposals for new SAN storage for our HPC cluster. My
requirements aren't fancy (~6TB SSD, ~80TB spinning rust, FC & iSCSI
connectivity, redundant controllers, no need for tiering, replication,
snapshots). Most of the responses to the RFP are pretty similar in terms
of hardware, performance specs, etc.
One proposed system is based on an Infortrend DS4016 array & attached
JBOD, and has a much (much, I mean _much_) lower cost.
The various resellers are making very strongly worded & weakly supported
claims as to why their storage is worth a premium price, or why their
storage is just as good at a much lower price.
In an attempt to get out of the storage reseller twilight zone, I'd really
like to hear from anyone who has had first-hand experience with Infortrend
products (bonus points if you've had any issues requiring support).
I'd also be interested in feedback on this kind of 'less-than-tier 1'
storage in general, particularly in comparison to Netapp/Fujitsu/DDN/Dell,
etc.
Thanks,
Mark
