My personal path has been to set objectives and then achieve them. The first ones were with the SAGE guidelines of what a Junior to Senior admin should know, and using "Essential System Administration" to get there. I found ways to learn and people to help me. And lots of O'Reilly books.

Now, as I try to transition to more developer stuff, finding objectives that are agreed upon is difficult. It becomes a matter of a GitHub resume and lots of time asking questions. I'm slowly building my skills, being honest about what I can and cannot do, and hope to find work that lets me enjoy the work itself.

Instead of a group, I'd recommend setting up the measurable goals. Then help people meet them.
