I’ve always thought that “DevOps” was a way of life (really, a way of looking
at cross-functional interactions) and not a functional title. So, my $0.02 is
that it would steal from SF.

I've been supportive of the NetEng site from the start, mostly because there
are definitely "Network Engineering Experts" whose experience may have zero
overlap with Server Fault. DevOps, though, seems like a definite
shot-across-the-bow of ServerFault, mostly because at some level, every
sysadmin is also a developer (of sorts) and has to deal with the same kinds of
issues.

I don't want to belittle the term DevOps -- there are definitely job roles that
are more solidly defined as development-and-operations, but the term itself
doesn't have a solid definition. If you consider it to be a very broad field
of expertise, then it's a vampire site, draining both serverfault and
stackoverflow. If you consider it a very narrow field of expertise, then I
suppose making a different site makes sense.

My two cents (disclaimer, I’m a moderator, since area 51 and beta, of the
network engineering stack)…

Yes, it’s probably an overlap to some extent. SE policy has is “don’t cleave
topical material out of one stack, to make another stack.” We worked really
hard to establish NetEng, and we’ve had to “that’s off-topic” a lot of things
that really could be handled on NetEng, to tow the SE line.

Meanwhile, the huge stacks like SF are just too busy to use at all. So these
tight little topics never get any air or life.

Forgive me for asking perhaps a loaded question, but isn't devops already
in-scope for stackoverflow.com<http://stackoverflow.com> and
serverfault.com<http://serverfault.com>?
