Disk allocation is an open question, I would love to get more feedback.

I'm curious what people would think of SSD limited speeds for reads but hard 
drive limited speeds for writes. Reads must block but writes don't have
to, so it might not make as big a difference to performance as you would think.

Another possibility is hybrid storage, with a smaller SSD block device for the 
OS and a larger hard drive block device for bulk storage.
