Things may have changed, it's been awhile since I've had to care about
Microsoft technology (thankfully :) ), but in the past, even though it
was open on the surface, they used to make a lot of references to
non-open sources. Additionally, things like fonts used to be encumbered
and didn't translate over well.

That may have changed since then, I don't really know. I don't
personally have any tools installed that can open or edit .docx files
anymore. I used to use OpenOffice, but it never really worked very well
(the formatting would be a pile of fail). Currently, I can read them if
I forward them to my google account, but I have no way to edit.
