That's a fair point, and certainly it is a downside. Maybe whether digital volume control is incorporated in the adjustment calculations should be a user option. But now we're getting dangerously into creeping elegance territory - which is the enemy of getting things done.
Here's my position. There's currently a bug that can cause clipping. It needs to be fixed. If taking account of the digital volume control when making the fix is easy, then it makes sense to include it, perhaps with a user option to switch it off.
