I have found moose an excellent companion at times - and of course I couldn't live without lazysearch and playlist manager plugins.
It would be interesting if they could also add a desktop optimized jive - but it still depends on squeezecenter's database and backend. I don't do it but using iTunes to manage your playlists should work as well - but it is less direct. My bet would be moose ( http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove/ ) and lazysearch to try something simple. I have multiple squeezeboxes and I love it when they work well and synced and... - but I feel your pain - the customization and configuration options are both a blessing and a curse...
