Well, that saves you having to adjust the volume as the environmental
noise level changes, but it still doesn't address the problem that if
you're playing a recording with a wide dynamic range you can't hear the
quiet bits unless you turn it up so high that the loud bits deafen you.
It isn't just classical music that suffers from this - try listening to
something like "Amused to Death" by Roger Waters in the car - it's
futile without AGC.
