For me, I don't like the photo-realistic icons at all. An icon is not a picture, and all this black clashes against the blue. I vote for the iPhone/iPod icons on the iPad. Screen resolution sides with me.
As to locating a player, the name can usually be a good hint. The other useful -maybe- feature might be to be able to make the player "blink" in order to locate it. Same as blinking a hard drive in a featureless rack of hard drives, if you see what I mean.
