Scrolling through a large library on a controller is definitely awful, even with a fast server. I got a controller when they first came out but now use iPeng on my iPhone. The controller is slow, clunky and unintuitive compared with iPeng on an iPhone... and all the other third party Squeezebox apps I've tried for iPhone and Android.
Pair a controller with an underpowered NAS and you're bound to be a bit disappointed.
