This is not true.
As long as they are on the network you can use UDAP.
iPeng does that for quite a while now.
They respond to UDAP messages and you can connect them to a server.
Works with all Squeezebox models as of today (OK, not sure about SB1).

What _can_ be a problem is if the device doesn't notice that the server
got lost and claims to still be connected but I've only ssen this with
the Receiver so far.
