I can't comment on iPods and iTunes as I have successfully avoided them...
.... but another possible avenue for car audio these days is USB. Does your car's head unit support USB? Almost all the newer model head units do. I've had a USB drive in my car for years, tucks right up under the dash for easy access when I need to add music.
