I think I fixed it thanks. Car is a Merc, USB is limited to 2k tracks and clunky on how it manages directories etc. VW is easier - it supports hard drives and good interface. On a Merc, either you limit yourself to constantly managing what you want to listen to, or manage an IPOD.
But, FWIW, I found a link to ITLU and this seems to do the trick. For other users thinking of trying this, the instructions on the web look limited so it's hard to understand what it is doing under the covers. No worries - when you install it, you get a decent set of documentation which explains all.
