When I offered users to voluntarily donate money for my plugins a few years back, I don't think I ever got more than totally $100 during a single month. This project is probably a bit more interesting than my plugins was, so reaching a few hundred dollars might not be unrealistic, but I'm still fairly sure you wouldn't get anywhere near the amounts needed to cover the complete costs pf 25 boards.
The only scenario where donations makes sense is if John would like some compensation for the time and effort he spends on designing the GEN1 boards, but if he wants compensation for this, it's really his choice to either setup a PayPal account for donations or increase the price of the GEN1 boards a bit to cover his efforts.
