Aeons ago I used a Logitech Ultrax remote on an ubuntu htpc. Worked fine, very cheap, radio-based, emulated a keyboard (partially if I remember right). Had far too many buttons, as the SB 3 remote does. IMHO, the Boom remote has about the right number of useful buttons. I think, too, that PC, tablets or smartphones are fine for complex operations. The IR is good (better) for power/reboot, display on/off, play/pause, and the arrow keys.
