Hi thx for that reply. You are quite right and I did not have the usb speaker connected when playing through iTunes. As it turns out the usb speaker sounds terrible playing anything and further investigations have shown that it is not compatible with the iMac.
So that's one problem down at least! Have yet to try the other suggestions as to be honest, i don't know how to...
