In fact you don't even need many SD cards. Once you find a reliable method to backup and restore you can reuse them. I've had Macrium Reflect (free) installed on my laptop for years and very rarely used it for anything. I tried using it to backup my Pi SD card and it worked perfectly and only backed up the used sectors meaning it can be easily restored to a smaller SD card if necessary.
