I read your post but none of you have listed what HT gear you have. You can see my list below and my AVR is the main reason why I jumped on this SB bandwagon. Both my old Pioneer VSX-26TX and my newer receiver have the ability to by pass any signal analog or digital to a direct mode. My new receiver can uncompress downloaded music back to its original state (via optical connection).
