The version of SoftSqueeze I have (3.2.1?) also installs SoftSqueezeHeadless.exe. I just have a shortcut to that in my start-up folder. Simple as that, and works perfectly with SqueezeCenter. I'm not even sure that Java is running as it has no graphical interface.
