Agreed - it's almost certainly your PC that's causing the bottle-neck. My library is almost all ALAC and it plays/pauses/skips the same speed as mp3, which is native to the SB3.
With only 512Mb RAM perhaps (if you haven't done so already) you could cut out uneccesary running services? Worth an hour or so googling some of the .exe files that you see appear in task manager. Windows being what it is many aren't actually necessary and can waste memory.
