"your mileage may vary", but I have had horrible experiences with HP
technical support. Dell support, surprisingly (to me, anyway) - has
been excellent.

To me, a server is a server is a server-- suns, dells, hp's all offer
basically the same thing (ilo, ilom, drac, whatever) - and once you get
a server configured and running then well, it's all good. Until it
breaks, and you need diagnosis and potential repair of
mobo/disk/controller/whatever.

Historically, we have preferred the sun servers mostly because we're a
.EDU and have received really excellent discounts. But we, like all
the other .EDU's, are now being forced to re-evaluate what we purchase
because Oracle is doing everything in their power to turn away the
formerly loyal sun customers. We've been acquiring dells so far, and
are pleased.

Subject: [lopsa-discuss] Dell vs HP in our Data Center

We're looking to phase out our Sparc-based systems with x86 and Linux.
At the same time, we're moving from a few larger systems to a bunch more
1U systems.

I've got a fair amount of experience with Dell's PowerEdge systems. We
have very good reps, and have had very good experience with their
support response times. The hardware and the performance of that
hardware has been excellent as well. OpenManage is nice, but their
DRAC's have been flaky at times.

HP is trying hard to get their foot in the door. I have no experience
with their hardware in the last 10 years, but their iLOM and Insight
stuff looks pretty cool.

Does anyone have any pros/cons when comparing the two vendors? Anything
to watch out for?

Thanks,

Justin
