Automator, is it really that cool?

I have a couple of Automator questions that maybe some of you can  
answer. I want to know how can I tell if a application can work with  
Automator? What is a tell tell sign? Is this program so cool that I  
can right something that can select all my pod-cast in I Tunes and  
update them with a single click or press of a button? I also want to  
know does these scripts stop working or get broken when you update the  
system or move from Tiger to Leopard? Any answers would be helpful  
because the stuff I have seen is unbelievable, taking a webpage,  
placing it into Text Edit and then converting it into voice. WOW.
