What are you talking about where the Ipod is concerned. Yes you can
set it up to be seen as an external disk, but if you do this, you
won't be able to play the content. You have to transfer content via
Itunes, especially where the shuffle is concerned. Now there is a perl
script out there and I can't recall the name, bit it was the only real
alternative to using Itunes for transfering music.
Also, the Shuffle has at least two settings I'm aware of and one of
those is shuffle mode. You can certainly start listening to something,
stop, come back later and pickup where you left off.

Thanks for speaking up. To answer your I Pod question, you can set
the I Pod up as a external drive and transfer files back and forth.
However I don't know how or what exactly is involved, but if it
makes a difference I just got one today and I am going through the
same thing. It isn't made to transfer files so be aware of that
potential risk. Also remember that if you're planning on using the
shuffle to play podcast that if you want to listen to them or pause
the show it will not do it. The shuffle will randomly shuffle songs
thus not good for podcast that you may want to pause. HTH
