You have to transfer content via Itunes, especially where the shuffle is concerned. Now there is a perl script out there and I can't recall the name, bit it was the only real alternative to using Itunes for transfering music. Also, the Shuffle has at least two settings I'm aware of and one of those is shuffle mode. You can certainly start listening to something, stop, come back later and pickup where you left off.
