Thank you for answering some of my questions. 
As far as the footnotes go, I will need to be able to read and modify all of
them. So this might be a bit of a problem. 
Second, regarding text attributes, what voice over commands do I have to use
to be notified of the changes as I'm reading? 
Forgive my ignorance, as I have spent little time with a mac. However, I
like what I've seen thus far, and want to make the best out of my upcoming
visit to the apple store.

Yes Voice Over will tell when font and text attributes change.

What do you mean when you say can Voice Over read footnotes? If you  
mean are they accesible with VO then the answer is sort of yes if  
using Nisus Writer. It's not feasible past the first page of your  
Nisus document, but hopefully the developers are working on this.
