Hi David,

The Firewire 800 cable connector will feel rectangular and  
symmetric.  The Firewire 400 connector will feel flat on one of the  
rectangle's short sides, but beveled on the opposite short side --  
you can feel on the connector port where it gets pluggred in that one  
end is tapered.  Don't you have a Mac Mini?  I didn't think any of  
the Mac Minis had Firewire 800 ports -- only USB2 ports and a single  
Firewire 400 port like the MacBook.
