This is odd. I know in the beginning, I was having trouble with
deleting items I wanted out of iTunes, but I read a support article or
some kind of document that explained that the best way to do this was
to do it directly in iTunes and to empty the trash afterwards. I have
not had any issues since then.

Yep, that's what I'm doing. Then I found them still in the library
after first deleting them from within iTunes and also answering yes
to the trash prompt.

under for example Music, you will find all kinds of items that
should have been deleted. I wish there really was a way to truly
