Some versions of flash have a bug that causes the entire browser to freeze while uploading. I am afflicted by the bug, running Flash 10.0 r45 on Ubuntu 10.04. It seems that there is no good solution at the moment. My host is Webfaction and I just discovered that they have a non-configurable nginx server in front of everything that caches uploads before sending them on to apache/django making it impossible to do upload progress bars at the moment. They are aware of the problem, but who knows when it will be fixed.
