Im very happy with webfaction <http://webfaction.com>. Its a great shared host. It is a tad bit expensive, but the service is awesome. Have used it for multiple projects, with no complaints.
As for deployments, Ive been playing around using fabric, there is also a project on github <https://github.com/ashwoods/webfaction-django-fabfile> with deployment scripts for webfaction, but I havent had much success.
