I was muckin around with a Behringer Composer Pro compressor the other night and worked out how to get it to solve clipping when recording. Basically set ip up between the decks and the record destination (pc, md, dat, whatever)...set the compressor to work it not to hard (about 4:1 and not too much gain reduction goin on)...then used the built-in PEAK-LIMITER to set a threshold which allows me to go up to a decent recording level and have it limited hard at anything above that. Really usefull, worked well and eventually had it tuned just right so you couldn't hear any nasty duckin and pumpin. Not all compressors have this feature though you could just run a normal limiter in line with a normal compressor i guess.

After all this reading, you can check out this compressor plug-in, "peak
compressor", were you can see the wav you're compressing and where are you
setting the thresold.. great to get started using compressors.
