All mathematics and scientific reasoning aside - I just tweak compression until it sounds good.
What I have found that can make a drastic difference is when you have an EQ altering the frequencies before compression or after the compression is applied - in other words the order in which you bus or chain your patch through the compressor. most every compressor sounds different so it's really a "personal" ear that you develop for your compressor and the results you can achieve with it. However the analog compressors are definitely imo the best by far still. Although I have been pretty suprised and impressed with Reason's compressors as of late.
