Sure they do have a better sound, but in some cases, you'll do with a freeware compressor or reverb.
In any case, it's always advisable to use the very latest versions of any plugin, as they often make optimizations for newer CPUs. Also, I noticed a slight performance increase upgrading my system (from a bare bones ultratweaked win98SE) to Windows XP profesional. I was reluctant to install XP, 'cos I thought I wouldn't get anything from XP other than a better stability... but everything is working faster and smoother than before!
