use ratios

170 beats in 60 seconds
4 beats in X seconds

therefore X = 4*60/170
X = 1.4117647058823529411764705882353

or

Y beats in 60 seconds
4 beats in 1.386 seconds
Y = 4*60/1.386
Y = 173.16017316017316017316017316017

If you just want it to loop without any funny pauses or anything or be
offbeat, just find out how long a single bar (or however many bars the loop
is) would play at a given bpm.

to do this, program a really shitty simple loop in fruity loops or
something. draw out a sound on each step in the sequence. then set it at the
bpm you want it to play. set up loop parameters so it plays once - export
the loop, open in sound forge, and see how long it says it plays.

a one-bar loop playing at 170 bpm is 1.441 seconds (close enough anyway), at
180 bpm it's 1.332 seconds... I believe there's a formula for figuring out
length of time for a bar at a certain bpm but i don't know what it is.
