At a guess, isn't the CD-ROM optical drive of which you speak an ATAPI
drive on a PATA ('IDE') chain?
If so, distro support requires installation kernel support for your
motherboard PATA chipset and ATAPI, which is a pretty minimal
requirement, IMO. Suggestion: Try and see.
