MY COMMENTS:
Well, just one comment: 150x40 doesn't seem like a very practical size to me. Maybe you meant 150x140 to make it approximately square?

That's the button, not banner. I shouldn't have put them together.

I got confused because you talked about 88x31 for the button. But I understand now.

Anyway, I'm not sure if we need a contest or more of a "collection of banners". It would be nice to have several themes available, not so much in terms of design bu in terms of the message they give.
In any case, we need to impose pretty strict rules on what it includes:
- *must* use the new logo -- no different ones allowed.

+1, though it can be very small compared to the rest of the banner. it's a brand name, by itself it has very little attraction value IMHO.

- should use Camel and Feather to mark association with Apache and Perl.

I think at least one of the two. So one banner may work for those inclined on using Perl and for others the banner with Apache theme will do the trick.

+1

- should get the message through about *what* mod_perl is about: that it's about web serving, with Apache and Perl, that it's fast and powerful.

Also the dimensions and size must be part of the rules. I think <10k (or may be 12k?) is needed.

+1

How do we make people obey to those rules? I would suggest having a small jury which determines the best interest of the community. We don't want a quick design which doesn't convey the right message, Working with designers, we should move them along the right track if they stray from it.

I'm afraid there will be too little interest and we may end up with unacceptable logos which "win" just because there are no others. Therefore we need to set a treshold to first reject those that we don't like. After that the same group that works on the site can judge if we select only a few (but I doubt we will have too many).

Yes, clearly. But instead of rejecting completely it would be more appropriate to work *with* the designers and guide them if they're off track.

How should we go about with this? Write up the rules, submit it to the list, and wait?

We need a deadline.
We need someplace to send graphics and some way for our "jury" to review the banners.
