404 implies they will be running a web service.

Customising 404's isn't hard.

The original domain may not of course have had a website, wonder what the 
spiders will make of that.

Although it has to be said that domains generally shouldn't expire, I am more 
concerned, like you said, at the greater confusion this will reap in the 
confused minds of people who want their domain back.
