The problem with that is that if you are a web host and you make yourself 
tech contact two things happen:

1. You get cited in any legal action against the registrant for trade mark 
infringement or other activities.

2. You get copies of renewal notices for evermore when they transfer out to 
Godaddy and don't remove you as tech contact.

I notice that Nominet are depricating the tech contact as its so little used 
these days.
We make the registrant admin and tech contact.
Maybe its wrong but it makes life easier and gives them control over their 
domains.

Oh and we keep an additional email address on file for customers and send 
renewal notices to that too.
This often gets more of the renewals than the tucows generated emails.
