No such thing as opt-out wrt expired domains. Tucows holds these domains
(for the above-mentioned $80.00) until the original registrant wants it back
or they can no longer derive revenue from it. This is, according to the
person I spoke to at Tucows, "to prevent the name from being scooped up by a
domain speculator who will offer to sell it back to you for more."

I guess it's okay to be a domain speculator selling you back your name, as
long as it doesn't cost the reseller more than $80.00. I don't know what the
legal or ethical ramifications are of us increasing that $80.00 (to the end
customer) so as to make a profit (or at least not lose any money).

I guess I need to thank Tucows for being our knight in shining armour and
taking ownership of my customer's domain (without my or my customer's
knowledge or consent*) and holding it for "only $80.00" instead of letting
it drop so that it could be registered by anybody (including me or my
client) for $10.00.

*Yes, I know.... If the customer had paid the renewal, we wouldn't be having
this conversation. But I actually had been dealing with Tucows all these
years because I thought that they were more ethical than all those "other
guys". Now, of course, I know that that isn't the case.
